It's fair to say out of the lens choice I have for both my Fuji X-Pro1 and Fuji X-T1 the one lens I reach for least is the Fuji 18-55mm zoom lens. It's a lens that despite critical acclaim I just don't seem to have gelled with at all well and struggle to get the best from. And I seem to be not a lone voice in my concern either. There appears to be plenty of users of this lens, who like me, fail to get good sharp images from it, with some finding that the results of their endeavours are less than spectacular, even though it’s touted as being above par for what labelled as a kit lens.
There is a school of thought that over 1/60 of a second shutter speed the OS helps to create an effect that doesn't help to give a sharp image, others swear by it. So as you can see the jury is pretty well split by how the lens behaves. It maybe that I just have a duff copy.
So, my challenge for the whole month of January is to just use that single lens, no other. I'm going to give the lens a good workout on both my X-Pro1 and X-T1 (which I actually think it performs marginally better on) and see if I can get to grips with it or finally decide it's just not the lens for me.
It's actually no great hardship as I shoot almost everything between the focal length of the lens so the only thing I'm giving up is aperture where I really want to isolate a subject image and quality.
Hopefully by the end of the month, I'll be in a position to either understand how to get the best out of the lens or be ready to make the decision as to what to do with it once and for all! I'll update my findings here mid-month with images and my feelings, and review the lens in more detail at the end of the month.
